History
Rose de Freycinet, a Pioneer
Born in 1794, Rose grew up in a world where women did not travel. However, in 1817, she stowed away aboard the Uranie, disguised as a man, to follow her husband, the officer Louis de Freycinet, on a scientific voyage around the world.
Discovered by the crew, she made a name for herself with her perspective and her stories. Rose thus became the first woman to document a voyage around the globe, with a lively and sensitive pen.
An Extraordinary Voyage
For more than three years, Rose traveled the world, writing about her discoveries and emotions, until she was shipwrecked in the Falkland Islands. Returning to France in 1820, she published her memoirs... before being forgotten. Today, history celebrates her as a pioneer of travel and a daring woman of letters.
